Is Being A DJ A Talent?

If you’ve been in the DJing industry for quite some time or you’re currently planning on trying your hand at it, we’re sure you’ll have already come across much debate over whether or not being a DJ is a talent.

Even though many people tend to believe that DJing, as a profession, does not typically require much natural talent, many people strongly disagree with this belief.

Wondering why this is? Well, for starters, even though it might seem easy on the surface, DJing is a very technical skill that takes many years to master.

As an example of this, the expertise required to be a professional, successful DJ, DJ’s need to be able to choose the correct songs to play during a gig or set, and will usually need to be able to select a variety of music that is around the same temp.

Just think about it: if a DJ were playing a song that was 500bpm and then suddenly switched to a very low-tempo song immediately after, it wouldn’t be received well by the crowd, and the transition would feel jolty and mismatched.

Not just that, but DJs also need to intuitively pick up on social cues in a matter of seconds and be able to quickly read a room to accurately gauge whether or not the crowd is receiving the music well or whether something needs to be changed.

Then, if the crowd isn’t feeling the music that the DJ is playing, music switches need to be made in seconds to switch the atmosphere and improve the reception, which is something that not all DJs can do.

It’s also tough to control a variety of different DJing equipment while also being able to handle the crowd’s pressure. Usually, the only reason it might look easy to some is due to the natural talent and expertise of the DJ.

On top of all that, DJs also need to have a great understanding of how to use all of the different types of complex DJing equipment. Given that most DJs perform a set entirely by themselves, this usually means that a great deal of multi-tasking is required while also interacting with the crowd and making sure that everyone is pumped and having a great time.

So, suppose you’re currently planning on taking a leap of faith into the world of DJing (or you’re already in it ) and are presently worried about whether or not people will take you seriously. In that case, it’s important to remember that the only person’s opinion that truly matters is your own.

If you’re serious about being a DJ, have a good dose of natural talent for music, and can handle the pressure of standing up to a crowd, then rest assured that you’re well on your way to becoming a successful DJ.
